Hazelnut
Deliciously crispy
Unió is based in the city of Reus, in the centre of a region known for its long historical tradition of hazelnut growing. This is the place to go for crunchy, delicious hazelnuts! This nut crop is perfectly adapted for the mild winters and hot summers of our Mediterranean climate.
Hazelnuts are a key economic product in many of the region’s rural locations. However, the areas dedicated to hazelnut cultivation are decreasing for a variety of reasons: strong competition from international markets (especially Turkey), the impact of climate change, and a fragmented production structure, with most of the hazelnuts being grown by small, family-owned operations. This last factor means that the economic benefits of hazelnut production are widely distributed, but it also makes it difficult to dedicate and attract the levels of investment needed to compete with the large international producers.

Common and Tonda

Both of these varieties are delicious and versatile. They produce good crop yields of small-to-medium nuts with a round shape. Easy to peel, these hazelnuts are suitable for products such as chocolate bars and sweets, pastries, spreads, ice cream, praline, and snack products

This is the primary variety found in Catalonia, and it is planted on 75% of the land dedicated to hazelnut cultivation in the province of Tarragona. This is a small, slightly oval-shaped hazelnut, very suitable for toasting. Its natural oil content also gives it an excellent flavour and texture.
